Bill Lawrence Wants to Change 'Cougar Town' Title E-mail
Monday, 17 May 2010 00:40

In a new interview with HitFix, series creator Bill Lawrence talked about how far the show has moved from its initial premise, in which Jules (Courteney Cox) dates younger men, since it premiered back in September.

When asked what he plans to do with the show's title, he said, "I'd like to (change it), and the studio has been talking about it for three reasons: One, partly as a result of common sense and partly from their research, they find too many instances of testing of people saying they would never watch a show called 'Cougar Town' ... and then they screen an episode, and people go,' Oh, I would watch this show.'"

Lawrence cited storyline changes as another reason for the potential change, adding that a title switch could "create some kind of dialogue" as ABC plans to promote its new and returning shows.

Indeed, as we highlighted in our recap, younger men seem to be a thing of the past for Jules, who is now hooking up with her neighbor, Grayson, played by Josh Hopkins. For now it seems that the 'Cougar' has been caged.

'Cougar Town' Episode 22 - 'Feel a Whole Lot Better' Recap E-mail

Although I'm on record saying that I'm not buying the coupling up of Courteney Cox and Josh Hopkins -- the two give off more of a brother/sister vibe than anything else -- at least the budding relationship between Jules and Grayson was treated in a funny way this week. I'll never hear the words "Shall we?" and "Indeed!" the same way again.

As usual, though, the episode is funnier when the entire gang is factored in. It's especially funny to see Ellie get some comeuppance for once, and at the hands of her mortal enemy, to boot.

It's interesting how Laurie has developed this year. It really does feel like the Laurie of the early episodes was a different person; constantly partying, sleeping with douchebags, and on the way to being a contestant on a VH1 reality show. Now, she's settling into a long-term thing with Smith, she's dressing in outfits that don't scream "slut," and -- gasp! -- she actually wants Ellie's life more than she wants Jules'. So, as we get into the second season, what Laurie are we going to see? I really like that she's being given more depth than just the "party girl" stereotype we saw early on, but I also don't want her to get boring.

'Cougar Town' - 'Letting You Go' Episode 21 Recap E-mail

We've known from the beginning of this series how close she is to her son Travis; it's a twisted 'Gilmore Girls' situation, where a young mom is relating to her kid more as a buddy than as a mom. But thrown into the buddy mix is Jules' paralyzing fear that Travis is going to grow up and leave her all alone. So when you see Jules make a sport out of watching her son sleep -- she calls it the "sleepy show" to Laurie and Ellie when they join in -- you're not nearly as creeped out as you should be.

And that, my friends, is why this show has managed to transcend its original premise and succeed.

Like I've said before, the only aspect of this first season that I don't really buy is the whole Jules-Grayson flirtation. For some reason, it never really felt real to me, more like the usual will-they-won't-they mishegas. So when they finally hooked up at the end of the episode, I didn't throw my fist in the air or say "Finally!" I just shrugged. They just work better as neighbors and buddies, doing things like dancing to Enya in front of Andy while Ellie is asleep. That's where the fun is in their characters. So color me unexcited about this pairing.
